I had a lot of gay friends growing up, but they had to pretend to be straight. If they “came out” in deep-south Alabama in the 1980s, they’d be mocked and shamed, possibly beaten, or perhaps even killed. Here in New York, they’re loved, supported, and celebrated. And here I am, cheering them on from the sidelines.
